Factory 25 presents The Portugal Premiere of Convento
It has been an amazing year for Convento; premiering at SXSW, winning a special jury award at IFFBoston and traveling with a kinetic pop-up exhibit all over the globe. So, it is with great pleasure to announce we are finally bringing the film inspired by the Convento Sao Francisco.. back home. Please join us on Friday, June 8th for opening night of a week long run at the Cine Teatro in the town of Mértola. Q & A with the director Jarred Alterman and the Zwanikken family.

Robotic donkey drives ancient Islamic irrigation system
Donkey work
It is an ambitious project to reconstruct all the original features of an irrigation system that, 400 years ago, watered a 4 hectare monastery garden. To also restore the ancient water wheel and build a robotic donkey to turn it sounds even more implausible. In Mértola’s Convento Sao Francisco grounds all three have been successfully achieved.

This is the new website for the Artist-In-Residence and Nature Retreat of the Convento São Francisco de Mértola, Portugal. The Zwanikken family has gradually transformed the ruins of this beautiful but troubled monastery into an extraordinary place, most simply described as a nature preserve and sanctuary for artists of all art forms.

CONVENTO a Jarred Alterman film
Convento is more than a film to watch. Convento is a film 
immersion. At the convergence of the rivers Oeiras and Guadiana, along what some believe to be a ley line possessing mystical energies, rises the four hundred year old monastery Sao Francisco. Its light earthen walls, marked by the sun and time, house a labyrinth of terraces, courtyards, gardens and fountains, all offering secret places to contemplate. An ancient irrigation system delivers water throughout, a silvery artery connecting all life.
Once a house of worship, there is a chapel now converted and dedicated to Christiaan’s work. A kinetic artist, he rescues the skulls and bony remains of the expired indigenous wildlife from an eternity of sun-dried decay, and then reanimates them with bodies of servomechanism. He creates a “tension” between Nature’s machinery and that which is man-made.
As motors hum and whir, his bio-mechanicals walk, talk, and fly, once again breathing new breath. They may be fleshless, but certainly not lifeless. Christiaan’s engineering feats 
for the monastery are as beautiful as they are practical. He resurrected a derelict waterwheel that is now the leviathan heart of the aqua system. It is true functioning art.

Kinetic Beasts from the doc/art film ‘Convento’
Here are some short films and clips from ’Convento’ a film Jarred Alterman in collaboration with kinetic artist Christiaan Zwanikken. Alterman is a frequent artist in residence at the Convento. Zwanikken is the initiator and programme producer of the residencies. Their meeting at the Convento in 2007 resulted in an ongoing artistic collaboration.

Springende zalmen bij een doelloze brug (de Volkskrant 15-08-2009)

Pulo de Lobo, daar is het mooi, had de herbergierster gezegd. Ze kreeg gelijk. Zuidoost-Portugal herbergt woeste natuur, zalmen, roofvogels,ooievaars en middeleeuwse huizen. Een Nederlands echtpaar runt er een Kunst- annex spiritueel centrum.
…Even voorbij de brug over de rivier Oeiras staat een bordje dat verwijst naar een klooster: het Convento São Francisco. Het is in 1980 gekocht door een Nederlands echtpaar, Geraldine en Kees Zwanikken, twee kunstzinnige geesten die op deze historische plek een kunst- annex spiritueel centrum begonnen.
Op de 40 hectare grond eromheen is een paradijselijk natuurpark aangelegd. Er bloeien zeldzame bloemen, planten, cactussen en bomen, er grazen paarden, rond een Romeins waterwiel met schoepen loopt een robot-ezel die door een van de kunstenaars is gemaakt, en wijlen Bram Vermeulen heeft er een Waterlabyrint aangelegd. Ook hier stikt het van de roofvogels en ooievaars.
Het klooster ligt aan het eind van een majestueuze, stenen trap die in de diepte beneden bij de rivier eindigt. In de koele kapel, van zo’n 8 meter breed, 20 meter lang en 10 meter hoog, klepperen de bekken van elektrisch aangestuurde ooievaarsschedels die bungelen aan meterslange, ijzeren bogen. Hun koppen bewegen in elkaars richting, alsof ze elkaar liefhebben. Boven het voormalige kapelkoor is een stellage gebouwd waarop twee karretjes met draaiende hondenschedels heen en weer rijden. Aan de wand hangt een lamp waarin blauwe vonkjes tegen glazen bollen tikken. Alles in dit atelier beweegt, geeft licht, maakt geluid of verandert van kleur.
Kunstenaar Christiaan Zwanikken, een van de twee zoons van het echtpaar en schepper van de robot-ezel in de tuin, maakt hier zijn ontwerpen en bewegende sculpturen. Samen met broer Louie leidt hij het bezoek rond, door de sacristie waar foto’s en kunstwerken van hun ouders hangen, langs de binnenplaats met oude monnikscellen waarin geregeld auteurs, kunstenaars, filmmakers en fotografen logeren om ongestoord aan projecten te kunnen werken…
